Got scraped by a previous-gen Altima on the way to work this morning. He was changing lanes when the person in front of me slammed on the brakes so I did too and the Altima didn’t quite make it around me. Just scratches in the plastic. I got his info (after chasing him down honking at him), but honestly I don’t want to deal with insurance. What tips do you guys have for cleaning this up? I realize it won’t be perfect. This car already has plenty of dings and I’m not selling it anytime soon, so I just want it to look OK from 5 feet away. Thanks in advance.

I’m getting a touch up paint marker for my car because I suspect that my fellow universitarios suck at parking. As a preventative measure.

Most manufacturers sell them, if its good or not I wouldn’t know.

Mother’s scratch remover. It works miracles

Good call. My dealer stocks them. I think that will work to fill in, but first I need to get the scuffs out and put down some primer.

Good point. I should just put a 26.2 or Go Vegan sticker over it and call it a day.

This plan has merit. You could also put an “I <3 (insert dog breed here)“ sticker....

The fact you had to chase him down makes me feel like you should demand payment from his insurance company. An hour on the phone might put a grand in your pocket which you don’t necessarily have to spend fixing the bumper.

Matter of principal.

Just chiming in about a tangential topic. Even if you don’t plan to file any insurance claims, most people’s policies require them to report any accident. Not saying the black helicopters will come for you if you don’t, but you might want to make sure that they don’t hear it first from the other guy with his point of view before.

I know this isn’t what you are asking, but I’d have a pro fix it. It’s not your fault, you aren’t paying, and I kinda don’t think you will be able to make that blend in at home.

clean the area with acetone to rid it of swapped paint etc. Polish the area (I prefer 3M perfect it rubbing compound available in small quantity at parts stores, any synthetic compound is good though) then touch up. Don’t use a wax to polish before as the wax will interfere with how the touch up paint applies.

Dang my car is dirty. Adding “clean whole car” to my list of things to do :)

I believe polishing compound is what he would be looking for. Afaik, rubbing compound is not safe for the clear coat.

...or so I was told many years ago. I am no expert.

synthetic compound has no grit...but it’s not that rubbing compound is not clear coat safe, it’s just more of a process when starting with a heavy cut grit compound. Rubbing/Polishing = same thing.

primer is unnecessary for touch up.

I had been misinformed. Thanks for the clarification!

they want it reported so it doesn’t get lumped with a later claim.

State Farm wanted to take away $300 off an estimate on my E class when they claimed prior damage, which was a small repairable crack in the center. Their insured that hit the car ripped the corner off of the bumper. So, I repaired the crack on the ruined bumper to prove my point, when the body shop called them asking where the previous damage was they had no choice but to pay.

Yes, I had to repair a bumper that was going to be removed and thrown away because they insisted that the previous damage should negate them having to pay to paint the brand new bumper that was now necessary.

That’s ridiculous. It just illustrates that we all have to dance when they say dance.

right, I’m fortunate to have the knowledge and means to do what I did, but I shouldn’t have had to. Anyone else without would have been stuck.
